When is a professional cyclist at their best? We plotted 400 riders from the UCI ranking of 2021; age against UCI points, colored by specialty.
The most striking finding: climbers and GC riders score highest at 23 years old. In 2021, Tadej Pogačar (23) and Remco Evenepoel (21) were already outperforming riders a decade older, evidence of a generational shift at the top of the sport.
Sprinters show the opposite pattern: their results peak around 32. In this snapshot, experienced sprinters like Cavendish, Viviani and Nizzolo still dominated their discipline, suggesting sprint performance relies more on race craft and positioning.
All-rounders, the largest group in the dataset, peak near 31, likely because versatility across race types takes years to develop. See data viz below:
Alejandro Valverde, at 41, still scored nearly 2,000 UCI points — more than riders half his age. Together with Roglič (32), Van Aert (27) and Van der Poel (26), the top of the 2021 rankings was dominated not by young riders, but by the twilight of a golden generation.
