The Story

Road World Championships medals by country: Belgium leads the men, the Netherlands the women

Belgium has won the most gold medals at the men’s UCI Road World Championships (31), and the Netherlands the most at the women’s (23). The chart below shows the Road World Championships medals by country for the elite road race and time trial, up to and including 2026.

Italy has more men’s medals than Belgium, but fewer golds

Italy has won 65 medals (21 gold, 26 silver, 18 bronze) against Belgium’s 64 (31, 17, 16). Together they hold 129 of the 378 men’s medals. Belgium has won an elite men’s gold every year from 2022 to 2026, through Remco Evenepoel: one road race title and four time trial titles.

The Netherlands has won one in five women’s medals

The Dutch total is 58 of 297 medals (23 gold, 25 silver, 10 bronze). Italy has the most women’s bronze medals (15). Jeannie Longo won nine of France’s 14 women’s golds.

One rider can make a small country’s total

All three of Slovakia’s men’s golds belong to Peter Sagan (2015 to 2017). Brandon McNulty’s win in 2026 was the first for the United States since Lance Armstrong in 1993.

What the chart does not show

It counts medals, not riders, and gives a road race medal the same weight as a time trial medal. The time trial dates from 1994, and the women’s road race from 1958 (men’s: 1927), so countries have had different numbers of chances.

Methodology

Source: Wikipedia (UCI Road World Championships, men’s and women’s road race and time trial pages). Data: up to and including the 2026 World Championships in MontrĂ©al, September 2026. Scope: elite individual events only, namely the men’s road race (1927 to 2026) and time trial (1994 to 2026), and the women’s road race (1958 to 2026; none in 1984, 1988 and 1992) and time trial (1994 to 2026). Team time trials, the mixed relay, and amateur, under-23 and junior races are excluded. Men and women are kept apart. Germany includes West Germany; in the men’s chart Russia includes the Soviet Union, while in the women’s chart the Soviet Union and East Germany are listed separately. Totals were checked against Wikipedia’s national medal tables.
