Road to the Podium TdF 2026

The Story

Tadej Pogačar won the 2026 Tour de France with a lead of almost 6.5 minutes over Remco Evenepoel. He took the yellow jersey on stage 5 and never gave it up. The race fell into place on stage 15, when Jonas Vingegaard, his only remaining rival, crashed out with a broken collarbone. From stage 16 onwards, the top three of the general classification did not change: Pogačar took his fifth overall win far ahead of Remco Evenepoel and Isaac Del Toro.

The final week was therefore not about the fight for yellow, but about what Pogačar did with it. Instead of adding stage wins to his lead, he spent the Alps riding as a domestique for his teammate Isaac del Toro, protecting the 22-year-old’s third place so that the two of them could stand on the podium in Paris together,  a scenario Pogačar had described as his goal before the race started.

Methodology

Source: UCI DataRide. Stage-by-stage general classification times of the 2026 Tour de France, as recorded after each stage.

Selection: The final top three of the general classification — Tadej Pogačar, Remco Evenepoel and Isaac Del Toro — regardless of their position at any earlier point in the race.

What was calculated: For each stage, the time gap in seconds between each rider’s cumulative GC time and that of the race leader at that moment. A gap of zero means the rider wore the virtual yellow jersey after that stage. The chart shows these gaps stage by stage, so a rising line means a rider was losing time, and a line returning to zero means he had taken (or retaken) the lead.
